Deva, Shahid Kapoor's comeback film, is now available in theaters. Shahid has been marketed as a mass entertainer and is portrayed in the movie as a mercurial police officer. There were high expectations for Deva because of the genre and Shahid's fame. But it seems like the movie might have trouble meeting those.
Deva collections for advance bookings
The collection of advance bookings is always the first sign that Deva will perform well on its opening day. The producers might not have a great opening day, though, if those numbers are an indication of things to come. Sacnilk claims that Deva's first day's gross advance booking revenue was only ₹1.67 crore.
Prior to its release, the movie sold fewer than one lakh tickets nationwide, which is a pretty low number. Deva's only solace is that, being a mass production, it should perform well in tier-2 and tier-3 theaters, where spot booking is still very popular. This implies that the movie has a chance to bounce back even with low advance ticket sales.
Deva's first-day box office forecast
Industry sources predict that Deva's first day in India will be lukewarm, with nett sales between ₹5-7 crore. There was no early screening for critics, so the first reviews will arrive in the afternoon. If word-of-mouth continues, the number may reach the upper end.However, all indications point to a ₹6-crore opening for the Shahid Kapoor film thus far. Deva's debut day would fall less than a third of Shahid's most recent hit, Kabir Singh, if this were to occur. On its first day, the Sandeep Reddy Vanga movie made nearly ₹20 crore in 2019.
The fact that Deva is expected to lose to Akshay Kumar's Sky Force, which came out last week, if the numbers hold true would be an even greater embarrassment. On Thursday, the seventh day of its release, Sky Force brought in ₹5.50 crore. On Friday, it is expected to perform better. According to Sacnilk, Sky Force earned ₹31 lakh on Friday as of noon, and it is tied with Deva (₹32 lakh).
