Google’s 25-Year Journey by the Numbers

Our goal when Google first debuted in 1998 was to develop a search engine that would assist users in understanding the information they come across online, and we remain committed to that goal today. However, Google has evolved over the last 25 years into more than just a search engine.

Among other things, we now map the globe, integrate AI into commonplace technologies, and assist individuals in developing their skills for digital employment.

As we celebrate our 25th birthday, we are examining Google by the numbers—25 of 'em, to be precise—to consider where we came from and how far we have come.

A Google researcher found the 100-trillionth digit of pi in 2022.

Dig deeper: In 2022, a Google researcher beat her own record of achieving new digits of pi, thanks to advancements in cloud computing. In order to analyze this data as fast as possible, Emma Haruka Iwao employed a computer software that ran on Google Cloud. It discovered the 100-trillionth number at a new, rapid record of 157 days. Knowing that 100 trillion inches of pie crust can travel 3,304 times from the earth to the moon and back can help you put 100 trillion numbers into perspective.

What percentage of patients worldwide have had their diabetic retinopathy, a major cause of avoidable blindness, checked for with our ARDA tool?

Investigate further: Diabetes is a rising worldwide problem, and associated diseases like diabetic retinopathy may go undetected and untreated in certain regions of the globe due to a lack of eye specialists.

We set out to create an AI model that might detect diabetic retinopathy in collaboration with Verily. The outcome was Automated Retinal Disease Assessment, or ARDA, which has been shown to screen for the disease just as well as eye care professionals.

One hundred billion

the quantity of alleged spam messages that Android's AI shielded consumers from during the previous 12 months.

Go deeper: Messages by Google use machine learning models to identify known spam patterns when spam protection is enabled. Unless you specifically report a message as spam, it accomplishes this without disclosing the content of your messages to Google servers.

Spam prevention is effective even when you are not involved with data. This AI becomes more intelligent and you get less spam the more people flag communications as spam.

Google data centers are 1.5 times more energy efficient than standard data centers.

Investigate further: Supercomputers crammed within data centers fuel everything Google does, including Maps, Search, Bard, and more! Similar to a laptop, data centers produce heat while operating and must be cooled.

For this reason, we have been looking for environmentally friendly ways to cool our data centers while simultaneously increasing their efficiency. For instance, we discovered that compared to air-cooled data centers, water-cooled data centers use around 10% less energy and produce roughly 10% fewer carbon emissions.

We were able to cut the energy-related carbon footprint of our data centers by 300,000 tons in 2021 thanks to water cooling. Compared to five years ago, our data centers now provide three times as much processing capacity for the same amount of electrical consumption.

how many languages Google Translate can translate between.

Go deeper: This is now feasible because to developments in AI and machine learning. Because certain languages are "under-resourced," it is challenging to locate high-quality datasets for our systems to use in order to properly provide translations for them.

We made history in 2022 when we used Zero-Shot Machine Translation—a technique that teaches a machine learning model to translate without the need for language-specific translation examples—to add 24 languages to Translate for the first time.

Even though AI played a significant role in this accomplishment, our collaboration with native speakers to establish criteria and validate data was also essential; when assessing the outcomes, they discovered that most of the translations were of a high caliber.
